What I Learned Mixing My First Live TV Truck Gig

gig journal mixing Feb 24, 2022

I was slated to mix a large in-person corporate event here in town. It was internal strategy meeting, Big room, big budget, high pressure stuff. Then, less than a month out, the client decided to pivot to a 100% live broadcast that would be pushed out all over the globe.

They moved me over to be the broadcast A1 and lead the audio crew with four direct reports. Me along with 56 other crew members were tasked with delivering a flawless, world class show.

30 presenters, 26 channels of wireless, a DJ, two hosts, video playback, audio stingers, remote presenters, and more.

I want to get very practical today and show you what’s behind the curtain. Maybe you’re wanting to build a career in this field and want to see what’s it like to be on a big, high pressure show.

  • How I kept track of over 30 presenters bouncing around between 5 different sets
  • Why trusting your limiter is important to getting competitive broadcast levels
  • What software came in clutch for me when managing a ton of audio stinger and playback cues
  • How I prepared for having a mix of remote presenters
